Much has been written on defensive driving, but first let us focus on the role of the pedestrian, for their own safety. Much of this is common sense, but having it written clearly for you can literally be a lifesaver.

First, you must learn not to trust the driver. Just because there is a stop sign does not mean the car stops. Just for the fact that flashing the sign that says “walk” does not mean you should run blindly into traffic. In these cases, it is imperative that you ensure that the driver sees it, and make a complete stop. The difference between blindly putting your faith in someone who does not know and have your life in your own hands can be the difference between a nasty pedestrian accident and a perfect day.
Never cross in the middle of the street. Drivers are not looking for pedestrians in the center of the block and parked cars, can obscure even to pedestrians prudent. The few hundred meters to the nearest intersection, and this can save you from traveling much further to the nearest hospital.
And last but not least, be sure to wear reflective clothing when walking in the dark. Even white clothing can only be seen one or two hundred feet away in the dark – even when it is illuminated by the headlights of a car. It does not cause many problems to keep a reflective vest or armband, and is very effective in preventing pedestrian accidents.
